Spooky Trail Tales is back
Looking for a perfect October outing? Look no further than Spooky Trail Tales! Our Garfield Library and Albion Library have partnered with the Whitman County Parks & Recreation Department to offer a fun and educational way to enjoy the outdoors and build children’s interest in reading. Starting now and running throughout October, families are invited to enjoy Spooky Trail Tales: The Hunt for Big Foot at the Elberton Hiking Trail near Garfield. Then, from October 22 through Halloween, the Albion Library is hosting its first Spooky Trail Tales at Klemgard Park.
Spooky Trail Tales combines three critical elements for overall family health: early literacy learning, family engagement, and physical activity. All along the Elberton Hiking Trail is fun sharing facts and information about our favorite cryptid. At Klemgard Park, poems from The Headless Horseman Rides Tonight by Jack Prelutsky are posted along the trail for families to read and discuss while they walk.
To get to the Elberton Hiking Trail from Garfield, take 3rd St (between Grumpy’ s Tavern & the Meet Shop Too), turn right onto Jefferson St, continue onto Elberton Rd for 4.8 miles, then turn left onto Draper Rd. Parking is in front of the old schoolhouse and the trail head is clearly marked across the street. Participants are encouraged to sign the guest book located at the trail head before starting off.
Directions to Klemgard Park from Albion: Take Albion Road towards Colfax (not towards Pullman). At the stop sign at Hwy 195, proceed straight across onto Hamilton Hill Rd. In 2.7miles, turn right onto Upper Union Flat Rd. In approximately 1 mile, parking for Klemgard Park will be on the left. The trail begins across the footbridge over Union Flat Creek and makes an approximately 1-mile loop clockwise through the wooded hillside.
