Events

Now is a great time to include Whitman County Library in your summer plans as you read, explore, create, and learn your way through the summer.

The Summer Reading Program runs June 3 – August 23 and all 14 locations across Whitman County are participating. All ages are welcome to participate (Including adults)!

What is Summer Reading?

Summer Reading is an annual summer program that encourages people of all ages to read and participate in library programs all summer long. Starting on June 3rd, you can come to any WCL branch and pick up your Summer Reading punch card, and then start reading!
For children, you get one punch for every book you read OR for every hour you have a book read to you. For teens, you get a punch for every 100 pages you read. For adults, it is one punch for each book you read. Once you have filled up your punch card you can bring it to your local WCL branch and turn it in for a free prize! Your punch card will also double as an entry ticket for a special county wide grand prize drawing, so make sure you fill out the back of the card with your contact info. Punch cards must be turned in by August 16th, and we will draw grand prize winners at the Colfax Back to School Spirit Night on August 23rd. You will only get one entry for the grand prize drawing. Pullman and Latah County residents are excluded from the grand prize drawing, and only one grand prize can be won per family.
Grand prizes are:

  • Children: Adventure pack with tent, walkie-talkies, and RC car,
  • Teens: Set of 2 LEGO kits (Wildflowers set and Harry Potter: Battle for Hogwarts set)
  • Adults: Ninja Creami ice cream maker

But wait, there’s more! After you complete your punch card and turn it in for the grand prize drawing, you can get a BONUS reading card and keep reading all summer long. Every punch you get (from both the original punch card and the bonus card) will earn you a LEGO piece to add to a communal build at each WCL location.

Communal LEGO Builds for Summer Reading

We are very excited to introduce community LEGO builds at each WCL location for Summer Reading! All summer long, every time you earn a punch on your punch card you will also get to pick a LEGO piece and add it to the communal build. Each WCL location will have its own build, so we are excited to see how much each community reads and what their structure looks like!

Why join?

Reading over the summer helps kids keep their skills up to prevent “summer slide” and kids who see adults reading are more likely to develop a lifelong love of reading. WCL strives to be a center for community engagement and growth, and we plan a wide array of programs and events to bring people together and enrich their lives. Summer Reading gives us all a chance to read and explore together. We hope to see you at the library this summer!
